My Favorite Makeup Tips and Products!
Hiiiii! Remi here!
Today I’m sharing with you my go-to makeup routine and products! I haven’t done something like this in a while, so I’m super excited about it!
As you know, I can’t be bothered with makeup — I rather spend time on my skincare routine so the base is really nice and hydrated. It’s an important step to look fresh-faced and glowy — even with a little tinted moisturizer on.
I’m going to walk you through the six products I use for my everyday makeup and introduce you to nine clean makeup products from Ilia.
Here’s to a faster, cleaner makeup routine!
Five-Minute Everyday Look
I first shared this look and these products on my YouTube channel. When I finished the video, I looked at the timestamp, and it hadn't even been five minutes. During that time, I was explaining each product and how I applied it. Imagine how much faster I would have been without talking through the process! That’s how I know this is a QUICK and EASY everyday look.
Let’s break it down:
First, we start with this Foundation Stick by Flesh. I use Number 19 Coconut, which I find to be the exact same color as my skin! This is super important to me because I love to let my natural skin shine through and only apply foundation where I have discoloration. I apply the foundation with the Shiseido brush — it’s one of my favorites!
The next thing I do is my eyebrows! My eyebrows are pretty thin, and they aren’t the same length, so I spend quite a bit of time filling them in. If I had to choose one makeup item to bring on a deserted island, it would definitely be my eyebrow product.
I use Ka-BROW! By Benefit. It’s waterproof and comes with a slanted brush. Starting from the outside edge, I draw fine lines until I’ve created full brows. In the end, they look very natural versus drawing a straight line with a regular eyebrow pencil.
The next thing I'm going to apply is this primer infused blush. I use the color Seychelles. It’s very pigmented, so a little goes a long way. In other words, go slow and go light. I put blush on the apples of my cheeks, which makes me look like I just got out of the sun and have a natural glow on.
Now, lip gloss! Lip plumping cream gloss by Buxom is my go-to and pairs perfectly with my blush. I’m always happy with the way it makes me look bright and glowy without drawing too much attention. If you’re not a fan of the dewy-lip look, I also love this Benetint Rose Lip & Cheek Tint by Benefit Cosmetics. It comes with an applicator brush and can double as a blush!
Master Kajal Eyeliner is the same eyeliner I've been using for so freaking long. I use the color, Midnight Brown. I start by extending my lower lash line up about half an inch. I’m careful not to let the line go out as far as my eyebrow. Closing my eye, I connect that line back into the upper eyelid and lash line. I do the same thing for the other eye.
This eyeliner is a trooper — it doesn’t melt or smear even during our Hōmebodies workouts. So, if you’re looking for an easy-to-apply, no-smear eyeliner, make sure you check this out!
Finally, I add my BareMinerals Bare Pro Glow. It's a gorgeous highlighter that makes me look awake and ready to slay. I apply it with the same brush that I used my foundation. Tapping it lightly on the top of your lips, cheekbones, and right under your eyes creates a healthy glow that I just love.
That’s my five-minute everyday look. I hope you enjoyed it and got some fun ideas for your makeup routine! If you want an even simpler routine check out this video on my YouTube channel.
You can also take this look a step further for a night out by adding some eyeshadow. I did a Smokey Eye look for a Nike collab photoshoot a while back and absolutely loved the way it turned out. Here’s the video. It also includes a short tutorial on using lowlights to give your nose a slimmer definition.
Clean Makeup: The Ilia Products I Did and Didn’t Love
I’m always on the hunt for clean makeup products that work as well as beauty products you could buy at Target. My impression of clean makeup is that its pigment isn't good, and it feels more waxy than silky. So, I was curious but hesitant when I got a whole bunch of products from Ilia. I recorded my first impression of each product. You can read the quick summary with links here or watch the video on my YouTube channel.
First up, the True Skin Radiant Priming Serum. I like that it's a primer and a serum all at the same time. It feels so lightweight and doesn't feel like I'm rubbing in a silicone-based primer that could clog up my pores. It feels more like a skincare based product than makeup, which I like. However, I’m giving this a five out of ten rating because it didn't work well with my skincare routine, and I felt like dry skin was rolling off when I put the rest of my makeup on.
Looking at the foundation at first glance, I was afraid it’s way too light, but I'm going to try it. After taking my time spreading out a thin layer, I really liked the color and glowy look it gave me! Now for the concealer. Using the applicator brush, I dabbed it where my complexion needs a little bit of evening out and smoothed it in with my fingers. Now that I’ve blended it in, I can see that this concealer definitely does its job.
Highlighters are one of my favorite parts when it comes to makeup, so I was super interested to see how Ilia’s products turned out. First, I tried the Illuminator. This created a very subtle glow. If you want a really natural highlight, this would be a good choice for you.
On to highlighter number two: the Liquid Light Highlighter. I was excited about this one. It’s supposed to have skincare quality benefits and looks like it will give a more dramatic highlight. After applying it with my fingers, it did just that. I LOVE it — ten out of ten!
Next up, Multi-Matte Pigment. I used this for my cheeks, but you could use it for your lips, too. The color is very, very pigmented, which really impresses me. Pat it onto the apples of your cheeks and then blend it with a brush. It’s definitely more matte, so you’re going to get a kind of blurry effect, which is nice.
Now onto lips. To be honest, my expectations aren't too high just because I haven't found a clean lip product that I like yet. But I wanted to give this brand a shot! I tried Wild Rose first, and omg I’m obsessed with it! I love when lip colors are like a pretty version of your lips, and that’s exactly what this is. It also goes on smoothly, so you don’t feel like you’re drawing on your lips. On top of all that, it’s not fully matte, so it’s got a little bit of shine to it!
The last thing I tried was the eyeliner and eye shadow pallet. I like how this eyeliner glides on better than my go-to Maybellene kind. I don’t think you can go wrong with this eyeliner if you’re looking to upgrade what you already have to a clean product. The eyeshadow pallet, Warm Nude Essentials, is made up of several well-pigmented neutrals. I just applied the eyeshadow with my finger — tada! I was very pleased with the pigmentation of this pallet.
I must say clean beauty has come a long since I tried it last, and I’m looking forward to incorporating some of these things into my makeup routine! First on my list of favorites is probably the serum-based highlighter, followed by the Wild Rose lip color. I use both pieces in my everyday makeup routine, so I don't feel like I'm buying something extra. I'm just swapping my current products for cleaner products! YAY!
Find What Works for You
I have one more product that I want you to know about before I wrap up this post. The Eyebrow Lamination Kit by Silksence. Brow lamentation is like perming your eyebrows so that your natural eyebrow hairs look fuller all by themselves. I started getting this done a month or two before the COVID-19 shut down and liked it. After about 11 weeks without it, I decided to find a DIY kit. It was super easy, and I was super happy with the results!
The kit was only $30, and I think I have enough stuff left over to do it 10-12 more times! It's definitely worth it, in my opinion. If it’s something you’re thinking about trying you can watch exactly what I did in this video.
Finally, when it comes to makeup, I think it’s super important that you find what works for you and stick to that. Just because I like to let my natural skin shine through and use lip colors that look like my natural color doesn’t mean that’s the look you love for yourself! So, give yourself time to make a Pinterest page of makeup looks you like and try different products until you find the ones that make you feel awesome and beautiful! Because that’s what you are — awesome and beautiful. <3
I hope you enjoyed this blog post and found some fantastic products to try. If you know of other clean brands that I should try, send me a DM! I’m always on the lookout for healthier options.
