I can drink milk again!
Back in 2018 I did an elimination diet. The only so-called “diet” I have ever done and recommend.
You guys know I’m all about eating what works best for YOUR body- but how do you know what that is?
That’s why the elimination was so powerful for me. For 21 days I eliminated food groups such as coffee, alcohol, gluten, dairy, red meat, eggs, soda, alcohol, and sugar and then SLOWLY one by one, introduced each back into my system to see how my body reacted. You can read more about my experience here.
The reason I’m bringing this back up today is because from that point on I stopped drinking milk- it made my stomach twist and turn, gasey and bloated. I label myself as dairy sensitive- which is still true.
Fast forward to today, it’s been years since I drank milk or used it any recipes. I’ll have ice cream on occasion- TREAT YOURSELF- but otherwise I limit to mostly plant based milk.
I want to talk about why some people have a harder time digesting milk than others. Aboutnone third of protein in cows’ milk is beta-casein which includes both A1 and A2 protein TYPES. Research has suggested that A2 protein is actually easier on digestion and can help some avoid any discomfort that comes with drinking milk. You can read more about A2 protein type here.
OK COOL. So does this mean some people label themselves as dairy sensitive when they might just be protein TYPE sensitive? COULD BE! This was the case for me.
Most milk on grocery shelves are made up of both proteins A1 and A2. However a2 Milk comes from cows that only naturally produce A2 protein type. Read more here. It didn’t make my stomach hurt, gasey or get bloated.
Benefits from milk are great! Milk contains only three ingredients: milk, vitamin D, and vitamin A. The rest of the vitamins and nutrients are naturally occurring, meaning they are delivered to your body in their natural form. (more information can be found here)
So I’ve been comfortably using a2 Milk Whole Milk in my pancakes, oatmeal, smoothies whenever I want a lil extra creaminess and feel OK knowing my body isn’t going to have a reaction.
